Recipe: Zwetschgen Datschi
I’m not pregnant. But the craving is real.
This is a real Bavarian treat, and if you ever visit Munich, be sure to hit what seems to be a fairly basic bakery right by the Marienplatz. This time of year, Rischart has the most mouth-wateringly delicious plumb cakes, baked and served the Bavarian way.
But if you can’t make it to Munich, or want a slightly more immediate option, this is a really simple yet effective recipe that I love making in the late summer.
Ingredients:
400g Flour
175g Butter at room temperature
150g Sugar
2 Large eggs
3 Teaspoons baking powder
1 Packet of vanilla sugar (you can buy on Amazon)
1/2 Lemon peel
5 Drops of vanilla essence
6 Drops of rum
1 1/2 kg Plums
For the Streusel:
250g Flour
125g Sugar
150g Butter at room temperature
2 Packets of vanilla sugar
1 Dash of salt
6 Drops of vanilla essence
1/2 Lemon peel
2g Egg yolk to brush on top of the dough
icing sugar for decorating when the cake is hot
Method:
I’m keeping this fairly simple and easy; mix all ingredients except for the plums in a big bowl and knead until smooth. Then place the dough into the fridge for about 20 minutes.
In the meantime, wash the plums, half them and remove pits, and then half them again, to make them pretty and bite sized.
For the Streusel, mix all ingredients in a separate bowl, and knead until they become crumbly - that’s what Streusel actually are; crumbles.
Pre-head the oven to 180 degrees C.
Depending on the shape of your Zwetschgen Datschi, roll out the dough and place on a baking tray, or into a cake tin, lined with baking paper.
Brush the egg-yolk onto the dough and poke a few holes around the dough with a fork, like Snow White does in the Disney film (although I think birds do it for her).
Spread the plums nicely onto the dough, and then cover them with Streusel.
Bake the cake in the oven for 75/80 minutes.
Decorate the hot cake with a little bit of icing sugar, which will sink into the plums and make it all delicious.
Serve with whipped cream or ice cream- omg, my mouth is watering.
Guten Appetit!
